The single biggest change in the Hunter trees is that having no pet is now a thing the tree pays for. Beast Mastery has a two-rank talent that rewards keeping the pet out; Marksmanship has a one-point talent that rewards not having one. Both exist in the same build, and one of the new Beast Mastery talents summons something that is not a pet at all.
51 talents against Era’s 46, 12 of them on spells that do not exist in Classic. Numbers from build 1.60.1.69913 against Era 1.15.9.69722. The trees are in the Hunter calculator; there are no builds here.
Pet or no pet
| Talent | Tree | Ranks | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beast Mastery, r2c1 | 2 | You and your pet both deal 1% or 2% more damage while the pet is active | |
| Marksmanship, r3c4 (the 11-point talent) | 1 | 20% more damage with all attacks while you have no active pet |
Summon Hawk sits at the 16-point slot in Beast Mastery: a hawk that dive-bombs your target and keeps attacking for 18 sec, two at a time, sharing a cooldown with Arcane Shot. Four ability ranks follow at 25, 36, 48 and 60. Two existing Beast Mastery talents were reworded to include it:
Unleashed Fury and
Ferocity now read “your pets and hawks”, so the hawks scale with the pet talents without being a pet.
Survival became a melee tree with a bleed
Era’s Survival tree ended in Wyvern Sting at 31 points. In Forever, Wyvern Sting is gone from the class entirely: no talent, no ability ranks. The 31-point talent is now
Lacerating Strikes, which makes Mongoose Bite apply a bleed for 21 sec worth 40% of the damage the bite did.
Around it:
Expose Prey (2 ranks): attacks on a target carrying your Hunter’s Mark have a 5% or 10% chance to activate Mongoose Bite for 5 sec, which in Classic only becomes usable after a dodge.
Strider Kick (1 rank, the 21-point talent): a kick for 100% melee weapon damage. Three ability ranks at 30, 40 and 60 as well.
Predator's Edge (5 ranks): up to +30% melee critical damage and +50% off-hand weapon damage.
Survivalist's Discipline (2 ranks): 20% or 40% off the cooldown of traps and Deterrence.
Lacerate arrives at level 30 as a new ability with four ranks, a bleed the class did not have.
Savage Strikes widened from Raptor Strike and Mongoose Bite only to all melee abilities, though the figure dropped from +20% to +4%.
Counterattack now hits for 50% weapon damage plus 26 where Era’s dealt a flat 40, and it picked up a second ability rank at level 30.
Marksmanship has mana answers now
Careful Aim (5 ranks) converts 20% to 100% of your Intellect into Attack Power, which is new to the class.
Rapid Recuperation (2 ranks) turns Serpent Sting hits and Rapid Killing procs into casting-while-regenerating windows.
Efficiency widened from shots and stings to melee abilities as well, and from 10% to 15%.
Trueshot Aura moved from the 31-point slot to the 16-point slot, gained ability ranks at 25 and 32, and lost its Barrage prerequisite. The empty 31-point slot went to
Sniper Shot, three ability ranks at 40, 48 and 58.
Aimed Shot is no longer a talent, and its ability rows are unchanged: rank 1 at level 20 through rank 6 at 60. Barrage was rewritten to buff it alongside Multi-Shot and Volley, and Multi-Shot and Aimed Shot now share a cooldown.
That Aimed Shot is therefore learned without a talent is our reading. It matches the pattern Blizzard confirmed for the Paladin’s
Consecration, where the talent was removed and the level-20 ability row kept, but Blizzard has said nothing about Aimed Shot.
The three trees in numbers
| Tree | Talents | Ranks | Era talents | Not in the Era tree | In Era, not here | 16-point talent |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beast Mastery | 16 | 44 | 16 | 2 | 2 | |
| Marksmanship | 17 | 57 | 14 | 6 | 3 | |
| Survival | 18 | 52 | 16 | 6 | 4 |
17 surviving talents changed tier, rank count or prerequisite. Marksmanship’s first two tiers were reshuffled almost completely.
Three talents wear a new name
| Era | Forever | Tree | What changed with it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Improved Aspect of the Hawk | Beast Mastery | Now also triggers off melee auto attacks while Aspect of the Beast is up; the chance went from 5% to 10% | |
| Lethal Shots | Marksmanship | Critical strike chance with all attacks, not just ranged | |
| Monster Slaying | Survival | 3 ranks against Beasts, Giants and Dragonkin became 5 ranks against whichever of seven creature types you are tracking |
Trap Mastery is now
Survival Tactics, and applies to Feign Death as well as traps.
Same name, different numbers
| Talent | Tree | Era | Forever |
|---|---|---|---|
| Survival | +5% parry | +10% parry | |
| Survival | +15% Agility | +10% Agility | |
| Beast Mastery | +15% pet critical strike chance | +10%, for pets and hawks | |
| Beast Mastery | +20% pet damage | +15%, for pets and hawks | |
| Beast Mastery | 2% of health every 10 sec | 1% every 5 sec | |
| Beast Mastery | +20% pet Focus regeneration | The same, and 50% of your mana regeneration continues while casting | |
| Beast Mastery | +5% dodge from Aspect of the Monkey, 5 ranks | +6% over 3 ranks, and the pet gets half the aspect too | |
| Marksmanship | 1 sec off the Arcane Shot cooldown | 1.5 sec, and it does not touch abilities sharing that cooldown | |
| Marksmanship | +15% Multi-Shot and Volley | +10%, and Aimed Shot is included | |
| Survival | 25% chance to entrap from three traps | Every trap entraps everything it affects | |
| Survival | 20% immobilise chance over 5 ranks | The same 20% over 3 ranks | |
| Beast Mastery | Pet stun for 3 sec, high threat | The same, and that attack gains 100% critical strike chance |
The spellbook changed underneath the trees
23 abilities the Hunter already had read differently in this build. The ones that change how the class plays rather than the wording:
| Ability | Era | Forever |
|---|---|---|
| One trap active at a time, out of combat only | One Fire trap and one Frost trap at a time, and the out-of-combat line is gone from the text | |
| +70 ranged damage at rank 1 | +20, and it shares a cooldown with | |
| −20 Strength and Agility for 20 sec | −2% chance to hit for 20 sec | |
| Untrackable | Untrackable and +50 melee Attack Power, with four ranks now (30, 40, 50, 60) | |
| 25 flat damage at rank 1 | Melee weapon damage plus 15 | |
| +5 melee damage at rank 1 | Melee weapon damage plus 5 | |
| “Lasts up to 6 min” | “If not cancelled, after 6 min you will actually die” | |
| Group members within 30 yards | Party and raid members within 30 yards | |
| Exits combat mode | Disables auto-attack | |
| 50 Arcane damage per second | 70 |
What left the trees
Beast Mastery lost Improved Eyes of the Beast and Thick Hide. Marksmanship lost Improved Hunter’s Mark, Improved Scorpid Sting and the Aimed Shot talent. Survival lost Humanoid Slaying, Improved Feign Death, Killer Instinct and Wyvern Sting. Nine in total, against 14 talents that are not in the Era tree.
Beta state
The beta caps characters at 20, rising to 30 later (Blizzard: Beta Now Live). That is 11 talent points, none of the 16-point talents, and none of Summon Hawk, Lacerate, Strider Kick or Sniper Shot, all of which start at 25 or later.
Blizzard’s Known Issues thread for September 17 lists glancing blow mechanics and display as wrong for melee and casters (Blizzard Forums: Beta Known Issues – September 17). Nothing on that list is Hunter-specific.
Not settled yet
Coming soon Summon Hawk’s damage. Its text scales the hit with ranged attack power but leaves the base figure unfilled in this build, so there is no number to print.
Coming soon The proc chance on Resourcefulness. The mana cost reduction reads 30% and 60%; the chance for the casting-while-regenerating part is not filled in.
That these trees are the ones a Forever character spends points in is our reading of the beta build, not something we have confirmed in game. The reasoning is in Forever talent trees.
